I believe that Wavy, the main character, indeed survived her family. The reader is given a glimpse into the realities of many kids growing up in such situations. It demonstrates that there is always a way to succeed, regardless of the situation. This book has been incredibly motivating. What do I Think of this Book | All The Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood One by the characters in the book and the other by the author herself because I have not been in any nearly similar situation as any of them, so deriving conclusions on my own wouldn’t be fair to the book as well as the author as she has included parts of her self into that book. Two situations drove this approach of mine. We can’t judge anyone until we’ve been in their shoes, and that was my takeaway from this book, as this is something people usually do these days. In the end, I understood that it depends on the situation. Infamously, 54 percent of Icelanders are said to believe in elves. This would be a steal if you walked out of the classroom transformed into a full-fledged elf however, nearly $50 to listen to a non-elf tell you about Iceland’s so-called “hidden people” does not seem like a great tradeoff. I couldn’t resist the pull of elf school.Įlf school in Iceland costs $48. “Wait, are they real fairies? Tell me more.” “You’re the kind of person who would pay money to see the ‘fairies’ on Ireland’s marshes,” he insisted. “So what? That was a great experience,” I said. “You paid money to shear a sheep in New Zealand,” he replied. “Every time I see a local ripping off a tourist for some ‘authentic’ experience, I think, ‘Who the hell is going to fall for that?’” Dylan, my ex-roommate, remarked a few months ago over breakfast. Putting forth the compelling idea that most of the key elements of the Arthurian legends are deeply rooted in Bronze and Iron Ages (the sword Excalibur, the Lady of the Lake, the Sword in the Stone and so on), Pryor argues that the legends' survival mirrors a flourishing, indigenous culture that endured through the Roman occupation of Britain, and the subsequent invasions of the so-called Dark Ages. In his latest book Francis Pryor – one of Britain's most celebrated archaeologists and author of the acclaimed 'Britain B.C.' and 'Seahenge' – traces the story of Arthur back to its ancient origins. The legend of King Arthur and Camelot is one of the most enduring in Britain's history, spanning centuries and surviving invasions by Angles, Vikings and Normans. Leading archaeologist Francis Pryor retells the story of King Arthur, legendary king of the Britons, tracing it back to its Bronze Age origins. To top it off, Chua had played the race card. That her girls had become musical prodigies, one of them doing a recital at Carnegie Hall, didn’t justify stealing their childhood. Most readers only heard bragging about the superiority of her ironfisted parenting. Intended to be funny, instead the piece outraged. And when her older daughter earned only the second-best grade on a math quiz, Chua made her take twenty practice tests-every night for a week. She’d trashed a birthday card the same daughter-who was 4 at the time-had made for her, complaining it didn’t show enough effort. Proudly, she told of depriving her daughters of play dates and sleepovers so they could drill endlessly on the piano and violin once she wouldn’t let her younger girl pee until she had mastered a piece. When Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother was excerpted in The Wall Street Journal, jaws hit the ground on architect-designed playgrounds nationwide. Yet another good thing about this book is that it is not long and does not drag on (like other great books as The Great Gatsby and To Kill A Mockingbird) which is great for readers who do not like to read long books and get bored when reading long books. The great thing about that is that it shows some of the other characters' feelings about the situations they are being put in and shows how Steinbeck feels about racism and sexism. The book is great because, not only the great use of description, but the characters because Steinbeck shows how children are, in some cases, better people than adults in the way that they do not judge people because they do not see people or things from that point of view (an example being childlike Lennie who has a mental disability though they didn't know that at the time the book is based). |
