In this future, time is valued above all else. So I was curious to see what Straczynski had done with it. Time rationing is a cool science fiction idea. And upon hearing what it was about, I have to say I was pretty excited. I must admit, despite learning that “Repent, Harlequin Said The Ticktockman,” was one of the most famous sci-fi short stories ever written, I had never heard of it up until now. This is not a definitive statement about the project, but rather an analysis of this unique draft as it pertains to the craft of screenwriting). Billingham, a TV writer and stand-up comic, manifests a competent enough hand with plotting and dialogue, particularly at romantic moments ("Now, this carpet has unhappy memories and I'm still not hundred percent sure I've got the smell of vomit out of it." "You smooth-talking bastard"). Jeremy Bishop (whose amusement with Thorne's growing infatuation with Anne reveals a particular sort of passive-aggressive sadism), fuels Thorne's rising suspicion of him with verbal jousts. ![]() This romantic subplot becomes entwined with the main plot as Anne's colleague and paramour, Dr. In a variation on the serial killer theme, newcomer Billingham's villain doesn't want to actually kill his victims (those who do die he considers "mistakes") so much as induce massive strokes that will leave them cerebrally conscious while otherwise in a completely comatose state known as "locked-in syndrome." Combining elements of both police and medical procedural thriller, the novel follows frayed, middle-aged London detective inspector Tom Thorne as he chases down a series of red herrings, gradually becoming more and more obsessed with the killer's "masterpiece," 24-year-old Alison Willetts, and the seductive doctor, Anne Coburn, who cares for her. ![]() ![]() ![]() This edition also includes suggested further reading, a chronology and notes. The best part of the book (to me) was toward the end when Cherise/Knightfall is raging at Barbara about how she owns the servers and databases, and will use them to tear Gotham apart. There's (what seems to be) a small tie-in with Court of Owls, but since I haven't read volume two of that title, I kind of guessing on that one. Her henchmen leaned toward cheesy at times, but I guess you can't have it all. Grotesque was a b-rated bad guy and pretty much disposable, but Knightfall was really interesting. The sub-plot involving him gave the story a creepy undertone that I really appreciated. Wouldn't you just try to get your kid help? Who just walks away when a little kid threatens them?
